The Romans were amazingly advanced technologically, I would love to have lived in one of their villas for a day. Imagine what the locals must have thought after living in roundhouses! The cats are very well. We're all glad that summer is just about over & it will soon be autumn. It's been a very hot summer & we're all tired of the heat.lynhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04509400868331534237noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3020849054403226268.post-25437767436914487612014-03-04T08:56:02.622+11:002014-03-04T08:56:02.622+11:00DH has read all the Falco books and has now starte...DH has read all the Falco books and has now started on the Flavia Alba books (she is step-daughter of Falco I think) and has enjoyed them all. One day I'll read them because they are all on our bookshelves, just waiting for me.

Hadrian's Wall is a fascinating place and so too is Vindolanda, though Houseteads Fort less so. What amazed me about Vindolanda was the fact that during excavations the archaeologists could not understand why a certain part kept flooding and turning trenches into muddy holes. Then they discovered a Roman pipe made from a single bored out tree trunk was still doing its job to supply water over a thousand years later when the fort was long abandoned. The Romans certainly built things to last!

Many of the Vindolanda Letters including the famous birthday party letter are in the British Museum and are absolutely fascinating to view. When I visited Vindolanda in 2010 there were no letters there at all, but I think now they have a few.

This book by Charlotte Higgins is one I shall soon request from the library.

JB

PS How are the cats?Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3020849054403226268.post-62781874114182296832014-03-04T07:46:24.202+11:002014-03-04T07:46:24.202+11:00Thanks for the link, I'll have a look at it.
