It's sort of like Jane Austen without the sex and violence - decorous to the nth degree. I'm almost 2/3 of the way through the Tyler edition and I am in awe of the care to which he has compiled the annotations. I would definitely like to read the Seidensticker translation. I believe he kept the same names for characters throughout which may not have been accurate to the text but would have helped my comprehension! I'd even like to just reread the Uji chapters in his translation which means I'm probably about to give myself permission to buy a second copy of Genji!lynhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04509400868331534237noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3020849054403226268.post-78396164969022284572016-07-26T19:21:14.082+10:002016-07-26T19:21:14.082+10:00What wonderfully succinct summary of a very 'b...What wonderfully succinct summary of a very 'bushy' and shapeless plot - well done! I am particularly fond of the Uji chapters myself, there is a far more cohesive feel to the story and the atmosphere. And I like the Seidnesticker translation: it may not be as 'exact' as the Royall Tyler, but it's much easier to follow, I find.Marina Sofiahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15251903359649828285noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3020849054403226268.post-40924041565002930662016-07-26T07:50:02.775+10:002016-07-26T07:50:02.775+10:00The Waley translation is supposed to be a quite fr...The Waley translation is supposed to be a quite free translation but many prefer it. The Seidensticker translation is also admired so maybe that's the one I'll read next time. I read Chuzzlewit a few years ago & loved it.
