I was surprised to realise that the narrator of this book was Willie Ashenden as I only knew him from the short stories which are based on WSM's wartime spy experiences. Of course I had no idea of the literary context, so it's no wonder it didn't make much of an impact. I do want to reread it someday. I picked up a bunch of the new Vintage editions (like the one pictured above) at Half-Price Books and they're just waiting to be reread. I also have Ashenden which I know almost nothing about, so now I'm intrigued.
