It was more the romance of Charles & his people, which I really enjoyed. Her historicals are generally not as popular & I haven't read any of the others but I thought this one was terrific. Then again, I'm a fan of Charles II so maybe I'm biased!lynhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04509400868331534237noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3020849054403226268.post-2884874085549400302016-04-20T23:19:32.717+10:002016-04-20T23:19:32.717+10:00I have to say that I think her straight historical...I have to say that I think her straight historical novels are not as good as her Regency romances, not because of the lack of romance, but more because of the lack of humor. That's what I love about her romances, and I'm not a romance reader in general.Kayhttp://whatmeread.wordpress.com/noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3020849054403226268.post-9347449545504167192015-02-11T07:59:39.246+11:002015-02-11T07:59:39.246+11:00I think her straight historicals have been neglect...I think her straight historicals have been neglected as there's less romance in them. I had lowish expectations for it but was utterly spellbound in the end. It's a cracking good story, and the historical research allows her to really get away with the more romanticised elements. Brilliant book!Desperate Readerhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15708411387912078122noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3020849054403226268.post-34653964162547868392015-02-10T14:30:24.030+11:002015-02-10T14:30:24.030+11:00nice set of images of Bocobel here

She worked on it for years but her publisher really only wanted more romances so it wasn't published until the end of her life. Antonia Fraser's biography of Charles is excellent, although it was written in the 70s. Jenny Uglow wrote a book about 5 years ago, The Gambling Man, which I also enjoyed. It focuses more on the Restoration period but is very good on the psychological effect of the early years & the exile on Charles's personality.lynhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04509400868331534237noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3020849054403226268.post-11649558194606098132015-02-10T08:04:31.616+11:002015-02-10T08:04:31.616+11:00I've only been reading her for a few years but...I've only been reading her for a few years but I've enjoyed all I've read so far & have a lot more to read.lynhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04509400868331534237noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3020849054403226268.post-21176544775349337042015-02-10T06:10:20.616+11:002015-02-10T06:10:20.616+11:00I read this book for the first time last year, and...I read this book for the first time last year, and I was a little surprised at how much I enjoyed it, because I have heard that the historicals can be a little challenging, compared with the Regencies.
