I'm now up to Ch 78 (!) & it's really engaged me now. The interminable journey from Holland to Rome is over but our lovers are still separated & I'm not quite sure how they're going to get back together. Reade is still digressing a bit but the story is moving along at a much better pace. Charlotte Riddell feels positively contemporary compared to Reade! lynhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04509400868331534237noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3020849054403226268.post-55466257719950320452014-11-11T03:08:14.564+11:002014-11-11T03:08:14.564+11:00Oh so that is what The Cloister and the Hearth is ...Oh so that is what The Cloister and the Hearth is about!
I have a copy inherited from my parents but because it has no sleeve, I hadn't a clue of what the story might be so thank you for enlightening me. You have now piqued my interest so I will have to go in search of it.
Ditto Charlotte Riddell - I have to confess not having heard of her but I like the sound of her ghost stories so I will have to investigate further.LizFnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3020849054403226268.post-68082546614901145902014-11-04T14:41:38.929+11:002014-11-04T14:41:38.929+11:00I think the beautiful descriptions of scenery were...I think the beautiful descriptions of scenery were one of the highlights of these stories for me. The ghost in Nut Bush Farm was one of the creepiest too, even more so because it appeared in the open rather than in an attic or another part of the house.lynhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04509400868331534237noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3020849054403226268.post-13897968330574390332014-11-04T04:30:03.148+11:002014-11-04T04:30:03.148+11:00I remember being struck by the scenery of 'Nut...I remember being struck by the scenery of 'Nut Bush Farm' so vividly that I remember exactly where I read it (in the vestibule of a CrossCountry train to Darlington!). Not often something entwines itself in my head like that. I couldn't tell you the resolution of the story but the getting there certainly stuck with me.
