Plans

Now here's a very enticing idea. Simon from Stuck in a Book & Karen from Kaggsy's Bookish Ramblings are hosting a reading challenge later this month called The 1924 Club.
All you have to do is read a book published in 1924. There's a list of possible titles on Simon's blog. I've read quite a few of them but two that I do have on the tbr shelves are The Matriarch by G B Stern & The Three Hostages by John Buchan. I'm looking forward to exploring the shelves to see what other possibilities I have.

Which brings me to my other plan. Christine Poulson (author of Invisible, one of my Top 10 books last year) has just blogged about her plan to stop buying books for a while. I read this & thought Yes! What's good enough for Christine is good enough for me - until Christmas, anyway! I do have several pre-orders on the way - Alison Weir's biography of Lady Margaret Douglas, The Lost Tudor Princess, Claire Harman's biography of Charlotte Brontë, the British Library's collection of Christmas mysteries, Silent Nights, & Jennifer Henderson's biography of Josephine Tey, so I won't feel too deprived. It's the eBooks that are the real temptation because they're so easy to buy & they're invisible so don't even take up room on the tbr shelves. Let's see how long I last.

I've been able to think about all this because we're having a public holiday today - for a football game. It's not even on until tomorrow but we're having a day off on the eve of the AFL Grand Final anyway. So now we're the city with a holiday before a football game & a holiday for a horse race (Melbourne Cup Day in November). It's also the start of the first run of hot weather we've had since last summer. At least the sun is warming up the veggie garden so I can start planting in the next few weeks.

Now for some completely unrelated cat photos. I don't have any new photos of the girls (I almost got a shot of Lucky with my 1924 books but she was unco-operative) so here are the collages I made last year when I discovered the collage app.
The clocks go forward tomorrow night & summer is almost here. Oh well, only six months until I can change the clocks back again!

  1. Hello, Lyn! It is always a pleasure to read you and to see the cats. I have been either re-reading or reading TBR for two years now and I still have thing to discover! Re-reading is great as one discovers things that were left aside in he first place, and one is less carried away by the plor. At least, I am.
I am joining in the 1924 reading and have Pink Sugar and the Rector's Daughter at hand. I hae others in French - the problem being that most of the time they have not been translate into English.
Have a nice day off and think that putting the clocks forwards means sun and light. Meanwhile we shall pu ours backwardsat the end of the month but it will be dark and cold... :)

    1. I do enjoy re-reading & I have plenty to be going on with from the tbr shelves. I don't mind the extra light in summer, it's just the heat I don't enjoy!

  2. I'm going to try to stop buying books (for myself) till Christmas too...it's getting hard to move around the stacks here!

    1. Good luck, Lory. I'll also be buying books for other people (Christmas & birthdays) but I really don't need to buy another book for a very long time. Let's see how long the resolve lasts.

  3. You have a wonderfully stocked library at home so there should be enough reading material to keep you away from book buying for a bit...but I do wish you luck. I challenged myself once at New Year and lasted until January 4. How pathetic.
The 1924 project sounds like so much fun but my reading is planned for this month. Looking forward to what others pick up though!

    1. Well, I've lasted two whole days so far, Darlene, so we'll see! I once lasted over three months without buying a book (pre-Kindle days) & it was very hard to start buying again. I need to try channeling that feeling again. I'm looking forward to researching 1924 a bit further, I'm sure I'll find other books to read that I already own.

  4. No, no, no. Don't put that thought out there. Repeat after me, "There is no such thing as too many books!" Did you put this here just to see if I was still enjoying your wonderful blog? :o) Only slightly tongue-in-cheek (not about the wonderful part!), Laura

    1. This is my dilemma! I tell myself I'm supporting booksellers by buying books but I do have to draw the line somewhere. I also tell myself I'm buying for my retirement when I won't be able to afford to buy so many books, which is true, but retirement is almost 15 years away so it could also be a bit disingenuous. I'll never stop buying books altogether, Laura, don't worry.

  5. Thanks for spreading the word, Lyn! And lovely cat pics :) I'll be hopeful for a cat/1924 combo by the time the reviews are coming (!)

    1. You're welcome, Simon. Are there any more Persephones (apart from the Holtby & Canfield Fisher) from 1924? Must check. I'll do my best to get a photo of one of the girls, probably Phoebe, with a 1924 book. This is a very exciting challenge, thanks for hosting it.
